Rep. Sarah McBride Slams GOP Bills Targeting Transgender Youth Health Care Ahead of Congressional Vote
Rep. Sarah McBride sharply criticized congressional Republicans on Wednesday as lawmakers prepared to vote on legislation that would restrict access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth and impose penalties on those who provide or support that care.
McBride, a Delaware Democrat and the first openly transgender member of Congress, said Republicans are disproportionately focused on transgender people. She argued the issue has become a political obsession rather than a policy debate grounded in medical consensus or individual rights.
The criticism comes as the House considers two Republican-backed bills aimed at limiting youth access to gender identity care. One proposal, led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, would make it a felony for health care providers to offer certain forms of gender-affirming care to minors, including hormone therapy and puberty blockers. The measure would also allow criminal penalties for individuals who help facilitate that care, including parents or guardians.
A second bill, sponsored by Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw, would prohibit the use of federal Medicaid funds for gender transition-related procedures for minors.
Since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, the administration has prioritized policies restricting access to health care for transgender people. Those actions have included removing transgender individuals from military service, eliminating references to transgender people from federal websites, and limiting participation in youth sports.
Advocacy and civil rights organizations have strongly opposed the legislation. The American Civil Liberties Union described Greene’s proposal as the most extreme anti-trans legislation ever considered by Congress.
McBride said the bills reflect a broader effort to politicize both a community and the medical care associated with it. She emphasized that health care decisions should not be driven by political agendas, arguing that medical care should remain a private matter between patients, families, and doctors.
