Speaker Mike Johnson Faces GOP Centrist Revolt Over Expiring Obamacare Health Care Subsidies

Speaker Mike Johnson is confronting rising internal turmoil as a bloc of Republican centrists pushes back against GOP leadership over the impending expiration of Covid-era Affordable Care Act subsidies, a change that could significantly raise health insurance premiums for tens of millions of Americans in 2026.

As Congress enters its final work week of the year, House Republican leaders are preparing to allow the enhanced subsidies to lapse, arguing that the federal support is sustaining what they describe as a failing health care system. Centrist Republicans, however, warn that letting the subsidies expire would harm families across the country and create serious political consequences for the party.

The centrist effort is being led by Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Jen Kiggans of Virginia, who say GOP leadership has failed to offer any viable solution despite Republicans controlling the House, Senate, and White House. Some moderates are now willing to openly challenge Johnson by forcing a vote on their own proposal, which would extend the subsidies while adding income caps and anti-fraud safeguards.

Johnson and GOP leaders have resisted those demands, citing concerns about how to pay for an extension. Instead, leadership plans to advance a narrower health care package that reflects longstanding conservative priorities but does not address the looming subsidy expiration.

Frustration among centrists has grown so intense that some are considering working with Democrats to force the issue through procedural maneuvers, including a discharge petition. That option would allow lawmakers to bypass leadership and bring a bill directly to the House floor.

Democrats, meanwhile, remain firm in their support for a three-year extension of the subsidies, refusing to back the bipartisan compromises proposed by GOP centrists. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ proposal could advance with the support of just four Republicans, though some centrists have said they are reluctant to take that step.

Efforts to reach a last-minute deal collapsed in recent days after disagreements over funding, abortion language, and procedural strategy. The breakdown has left Johnson navigating a politically volatile situation, with both sides accusing the other of failing to prevent a looming health care disruption.

Across the Capitol, a small bipartisan group of senators has also been discussing possible solutions, though no agreement has been announced.

The standoff underscores the fragile balance of power in the House and highlights the growing influence of centrist lawmakers willing to challenge party leadership over high-stakes policy deadlines.
