AI Isn’t Replacing Jobs Yet — In Fact, Many AI-Exposed Roles Are Growing

Fears that artificial intelligence will rapidly replace human workers may be overstated — at least for now.

New research from Vanguard finds that jobs most exposed to AI automation are actually growing faster than they did before the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the analysis, employment in highly AI-exposed occupations increased by 1.7% from mid-2023 to mid-2025, outpacing growth seen in the years leading up to the pandemic.

These roles include office clerks, HR assistants, law clerks, data scientists and other jobs where AI could theoretically automate a large share of daily tasks. Instead of shrinking, many of these positions are expanding, suggesting AI has not yet reached a point where it can broadly replace workers.

Wages are rising as well. Vanguard found real wage growth in AI-exposed jobs accelerated to 3.8% in the post-Covid period, compared to just 0.1% before the pandemic. That increase outpaces wage growth in jobs less exposed to artificial intelligence.

Economists say the findings do not mean AI poses no long-term risk. Some companies have already cut entry-level positions or slowed hiring after adopting AI tools, a trend noted in recent Federal Reserve reports. However, Vanguard researchers say the technology still struggles with accuracy, reliability and real-world decision-making, limiting its ability to fully replace human workers.

Experts caution that pressure may increase as AI systems improve. Entry-level workers, customer service roles, data analysts and paralegals could face reduced demand in the future. Still, for now, the data suggests AI is changing workflows more than it is eliminating jobs outright.
