CNN Fact Check Says Trump Repeated False Claims in Prime-Time Address

A new CNN fact check is challenging several claims made by President Donald Trump during a prime-time address from the White House, saying multiple statements were inaccurate or lacked needed context.

On inflation, Trump said “inflation is stopped,” but CNN notes inflation has not stopped; the Consumer Price Index measures how fast prices are rising, and recent readings indicate prices are still increasing, even if the pace changes. CNN also says Trump repeated a claim that inflation was at a decades-long or historic peak when he returned to office, but points to available CPI readings around that time showing inflation was nowhere near an all-time high.

On everyday costs, Trump highlighted falling egg prices and suggested “everything else is falling rapidly.” CNN reports that broader grocery prices have generally risen this year, and that the egg figure Trump cited appears to reference wholesale prices rather than what consumers typically pay at the store.

CNN also flags claims about gasoline prices, noting that while some stations may dip to very low prices, statewide averages are generally higher, and only a limited number of states fall below certain thresholds at any given time.

On immigration, CNN disputes Trump’s claim that 25 million migrants entered the country under the Biden administration, citing federal encounter totals that are far lower, with many encounters involving expulsions or removals. The fact check also says Trump has not provided evidence for repeated assertions that foreign countries emptied prisons or mental institutions to send people to the United States.

The report also challenges Trump’s framing of policy outcomes, including the idea that his domestic bill ended taxation on Social Security benefits. CNN says a temporary deduction for some older taxpayers is not the same as eliminating taxes on Social Security for all recipients. And on health care, CNN argues Democrats are not demanding premium increases; instead, they are pushing to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies scheduled to expire.
