Latex, Glitter, and Grit: Inside the World of Japan’s All-Female Sukeban Wrestling League
Latex, glitter, and raw athleticism collide in Sukeban, an all-female Japanese wrestling league that is redefining what professional wrestling looks like for global audiences.
The league recently staged its world championship match in Miami Beach, where defending champion Atomic Banshee faced challenger Ichigo Sayaka in front of a packed, high-energy crowd. The bout featured dramatic in-ring action, brawling into the media pit, and theatrical finishes that kept fans chanting wrestlers’ names throughout the night.
Sukeban launched two years ago and quickly gained attention for its striking visual identity. Wrestlers perform in full makeup, wigs, corsets, latex, and custom nail art, drawing inspiration from Tokyo’s rebellious girl gangs of the 1960s and 1970s. Competitors are organized into rival factions such as the Harajuku Stars, Cherry Bomb Girls, and Dangerous Liaisons, often supporting teammates from ringside.
The league was co-founded by British fashion designer Olympia Le-Tan, along with Alex Detrick and wrestler Ian Fried. Sukeban intentionally blurs the lines between sport, fashion, and performance art, frequently hosting sold-out events during major cultural gatherings like Art Basel Miami Beach and anime conventions.
While pro wrestling has always leaned into spectacle, Sukeban amplifies that element. Each wrestler’s persona is unique to the league and carefully developed to match their personality and fighting style. The legendary retired wrestler Bull Nakano serves as commissioner and helped assemble the roster.
Behind the scenes, hours of preparation go into hair, makeup, and wardrobe before each match. Fashion and beauty industry heavyweights have become part of the process, reinforcing Sukeban’s growing presence at the intersection of pop culture and athletics.
At the Miami championship event, Ichigo Sayaka ultimately claimed victory, ending Atomic Banshee’s title reign and celebrating alongside her Harajuku Stars teammates. The moment underscored Sukeban’s core appeal: fierce competition wrapped in bold style and storytelling.
