LinkedIn’s Year in Review Highlights Just How Tough the Job Market Has Become
LinkedIn’s new Year in Review feature was designed to give users a snapshot of their professional activity over the past year. Instead, for many job seekers, it became an uncomfortable reminder of just how challenging the job market has been.
The feature, similar to Spotify Wrapped, shows users how many days they visited LinkedIn, how many new connections they made and how many people in their network landed new jobs. The rollout came at a difficult moment. The US unemployment rate has climbed to a four-year high, layoffs have increased and hiring has slowed significantly. Earlier this year, job seekers outnumbered available positions for the first time in four years, putting 2025 on track to be the weakest hiring year since 2020.
Some users took to social media to vent their frustration. Screenshots of LinkedIn summaries circulated online, including one showing hundreds of connections landing new jobs while the user remained unemployed. Others joked that LinkedIn’s version of “Wrapped” felt more like a reminder of rejection than a celebration of progress.
LinkedIn acknowledged the difficult timing. In a statement to CNN, editor-in-chief Dan Roth said the company understands how uncertain the job market has felt for many people. He said the goal of the Year in Review was to reflect a broader picture of professional life, including skill-building, networking and sharing ideas — not just job searches.
Reactions on LinkedIn itself were more positive. Some users highlighted expanded networks, new skills and meaningful professional interactions. Still, the feature sparked a broader conversation about whether year-end digital summaries are welcome when many people are navigating layoffs, job searches and stalled career moves.
As companies increasingly look for ways to package personal data into shareable milestones, some users say there’s a growing fatigue with having every part of life “wrapped up” — especially during a year when professional progress has been hard to come by.
