Reports of possible immigration raids across Coachella Valley prompt reactions from local leaders
Reports of possible immigration raids across the Coachella Valley are prompting concern and reaction from local leaders as questions remain about federal enforcement activity in multiple cities.
NBC Palm Springs received video captured by a Ring doorbell camera in Cathedral City showing an unmarked vehicle pulling up to a home. In the video, a man is seen outside the residence dropping to his knees before being handcuffed and taken into custody. The person who shared the video with NBC Palm Springs says they do not know the individual involved.
NBC Palm Springs reached out to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to confirm whether the incident was related to immigration enforcement, but has not yet received a response. Cathedral City police say they cannot confirm the presence of ICE agents in the city today. U.S. Border Patrol also told NBC Palm Springs they were not operating in Cathedral City.
Additional video sent to NBC Palm Springs shows what appears to be a law enforcement arrest outside an apartment complex in Indio. In that video, an officer is heard telling bystanders the man being detained is in the country illegally. Indio police confirmed there was federal enforcement activity in the city today, but did not identify which agency was involved.
Indio city officials recently passed a motion using the Freedom of Information Act to request enforcement statistics from the Department of Homeland Security. Indio City Council member Oscar Ortiz addressed the situation on social media, saying there were reports of ICE presence in the city and that at least two workers were taken into custody. Ortiz also said two youths were detained earlier this week when they attended an immigration appointment with their mother.
Congressman Raul Ruiz released a statement condemning what he described as indiscriminate deportations targeting non-criminal immigrants, saying the actions are creating fear, hurting local businesses, and separating families.
NBC Palm Springs also spoke with TODEC, a local advocacy organization, which says it has received calls throughout the week from families reporting federal immigration enforcement in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Indio. According to TODEC, families reported that between 11 and 14 people were detained just yesterday, allegedly by ICE agents.
NBC Palm Springs has reached out to ICE for clarification and is awaiting a response. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
