Trump Media Announces Surprise Merger With Nuclear Fusion Company in $6 Billion Deal
Trump Media and Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, is making a major and unexpected bet on nuclear fusion, announcing a surprise merger with TAE Technologies in a deal valued at more than $6 billion.
The all-stock merger would create one of the first publicly traded nuclear fusion companies, pushing Trump Media far beyond its roots in social media and crypto. News of the announcement sent Trump Media shares soaring more than 35 percent in early trading.
Fusion energy has long been viewed as a potential clean-energy breakthrough, promising abundant power with no carbon emissions and no long-term nuclear waste. Interest in the technology has surged as artificial intelligence fuels massive growth in electricity-hungry data centers across the country.
Under the terms of the deal, shareholders of Trump Media and TAE Technologies would each own about half of the combined company. Trump Media would also provide $300 million in cash to help fund TAE’s expansion plans. Company leaders say the goal is to begin construction as soon as next year on what they hope will be the world’s first utility-scale fusion power plant.
TAE executives say access to public markets is critical, describing fusion as a multi-billion-dollar undertaking that requires rapid capital investment. While the technology has shown promise in laboratories, commercial-scale fusion remains unproven and is still years away from delivering electricity to the grid.
The merger also carries political implications. Analysts note that TAE could gain influence and visibility through its association with Trump Media, but that connection could also invite heightened scrutiny, especially if the company seeks federal support.
Trump Media has struggled financially in recent years, with Truth Social remaining far smaller than major social media competitors. The company has attempted to diversify into artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and asset management, but this fusion deal represents its boldest pivot yet.
Supporters of the move say nuclear fusion could play a critical role in meeting future energy demands, especially as competition with China intensifies over both energy supply and advanced technologies.
