Americans Feel the Pinch Despite Cooling Inflation and Rising Wages, Economists Say

As the winter holiday season unfolds, many Americans are confronting an ongoing affordability problem, even as new economic data suggests modest improvements in wages and inflation.
According to the latest November jobs report, wages rose about 3.5 percent over the past year. However, economists say that increase is not translating into real relief for many households. Consumer confidence remains fragile, and many people report that higher paychecks are being quickly erased by the cost of everyday expenses.
New federal data shows inflation slowed to 2.7 percent in November, a sign that price increases may be easing. Still, economists caution that the figure may not fully capture the financial strain facing families. Disruptions in data collection during a recent shutdown could mean the inflation reading is incomplete, and prices for essential goods and services remain elevated.
Economists point out that routine expenses such as groceries, gas, dining out, and monthly energy bills continue to consume a large share of household income. Those costs often wipe out wage gains before families can feel any meaningful improvement in their financial situation.
The impact is not evenly distributed. Data from Bank of America shows higher-income households saw pay increases of about 4 percent, while middle-income households experienced growth of roughly 2.3 percent. Low-income households fared worst, with wage growth around 1.4 percent. Economists say inflation hits these groups differently because lower-income families spend a much larger share of their income on necessities.
With signs of a softening labor market and slowing wage growth, uncertainty clouds the economic outlook heading into 2026. While there is cautious optimism that inflation could continue to ease and unemployment may stabilize, experts say mixed signals remain.
For many Americans, the numbers may look better on paper, but the reality at the checkout line and gas pump tells a different story.
