Indio Police Respond to Traffic Collision Involving ICE-Detained Driver on Vargas Road
The Indio Police Department responded to a traffic collision at approximately 12:30 p.m. today in the 46000 block of Vargas Road.
During the investigation, officers learned that agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were searching for a person and vehicle they had previously attempted to stop in Salton City. Prior to being located by ICE, the vehicle — a Ford Focus — was involved in a traffic collision and struck a mailbox mounted on a block wall.
ICE agents detained the 34-year-old male driver at the scene. The driver was wanted in connection with an immigration violation and was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Three children were also inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. Authorities confirmed the children were not seriously injured and were properly restrained. As a precautionary measure, all three were transported to a local hospital for evaluation, where they will be reunited with their mother.
The Indio Police Department stated its role was limited to responding to the traffic collision, ensuring roadway safety, and coordinating appropriate medical care. The department emphasized it was not involved in any ICE enforcement or investigative actions and did not participate in the federal operation.
Residents with questions regarding ICE activity are encouraged to contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s San Diego Field Office. The Indio Police Department reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and transparency and said it will continue to keep the community informed.
