Kennedy Center Gets New Signage Bearing Trump’s Name

New signage is being installed at Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center to include President Donald Trump’s name, following a vote by the institution’s board of trustees to rename the landmark performing arts venue. The decision was announced one day earlier and marks a significant change for a building long recognized as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.

The facility, previously known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, has been renamed the Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. The center’s social media accounts were also updated to reflect the new name as signage began going up Friday.

Despite the changes, the legality of the move remains uncertain. Congress designated the Kennedy Center as a memorial in 1964 following President Kennedy’s assassination, raising questions about whether the board has the authority to rename the institution without congressional approval.

The decision has drawn criticism, including from members of the Kennedy family. Maria Shriver, President Kennedy’s niece, called the renaming effort “beyond comprehension,” reflecting broader backlash from critics who argue the move undermines the center’s original purpose and legacy.

President Trump, meanwhile, has defended his involvement with the center, saying he has helped stabilize the institution both financially and structurally. He has also said he plans to push Congress to invest additional funding into the venue.

Since returning to office, Trump has reshaped the Kennedy Center’s leadership, removing members of the board of trustees and later being elected chair after appointing new board members. The new signage represents the second federal building this month to bear Trump’s name, following the renaming of the US Institute of Peace earlier in December.

The developments continue to fuel debate over the role of politics in national cultural institutions and the future identity of one of the country’s most prominent performing arts centers.
