Local Golfer Johnny Brande has Passed Away after Cancer Battle
The Coachella Valley community is mourning the loss of Johnny Brande, a local golfer from Palm Desert, who passed away just weeks after celebrating his 16th birthday.
Johnny, the younger brother of Palm Desert High School star athlete Jake Brande, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in May. After months of treatment and a courageous fight, Johnny passed away just days before Christmas, surrounded by his parents.
In a statement released by the family, they shared in part, “He fought to the very end. He loved God and we know he’s in heaven. He was an amazing young man, friend, brother and son. He really was the best.”
Following his diagnosis, Johnny was under the care of doctors at UCLA Health, where he received extensive treatment. During that time, he was also given opportunities that created unforgettable memories. A lifelong sports fan, Johnny attended Los Angeles Rams games, stood on the field, and met several players. He also threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium and met his favorite baseball player, Clayton Kershaw.
On November 12, one of the most emotional moments of the year took place at Palm Desert High School. Jake Brande signed his commitment letter to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in front of a packed gymnasium. When the Brande family, including Johnny, walked into the gym to support Jake, the crowd erupted in cheers.
Just weeks later, Jake was honored as Student of the Month. However, neither Johnny nor his parents were able to attend the ceremony. By that time, Johnny had been flown to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to try new forms of chemotherapy. It was there that Johnny ultimately succumbed to his illness.
From Caitlyn:
I first met Johnny’s mother, Erin Brande, at one of Jake’s baseball games. From the very first interaction, it was clear the Brandes' were the kind of family you often only see in movies: full of love, warmth, and unwavering support for one another.
Johnny's family ensured he received the very best care from the moment he became ill. From urgently seeking medical help here in the Desert, to taking extended time away from work so they could remain by Johnny’s side around the clock at UCLA Health, and ultimately traveling to Houston in hopes of more treatment options, his parents never left him.
As the Brande family grieves and prepares for what comes next, their GoFundMe page remains active. Those interested in donating can do so through the link provided, as no family should have to worry about financial stress while navigating a loss like this.
