Unidentified Agent Arrests Spark Fear Across Coachella Valley as Palm Springs Father Detained
Fear and uncertainty are spreading across the Coachella Valley following multiple arrests carried out by unidentified agents, prompting some residents to avoid outdoor activities altogether. One of the families affected is that of Hugo Ramirez, a Palm Springs resident and father, who was allegedly detained Wednesday while heading out to complete his regular landscaping route.
According to his wife, Sederica Sacramiento, Ramirez made a distressing phone call to relatives moments before he and his nephew were arrested. Video taken shortly before the detention appears to capture voices believed to be federal agents. Since that day, the family says Ramirez has been moved between facilities, most recently transferred to an undisclosed location. As of Friday, his exact whereabouts remain unknown.
The detention has taken a heavy emotional toll on the family, particularly on the couple’s children. Sacramiento says her younger children struggle to understand why their father has not returned home, while the oldest is increasingly anxious about what comes next. The family is also deeply concerned about Ramirez’s health, as he recently underwent dental surgery and was scheduled for follow-up care. Without access to proper treatment, they worry about his ability to eat and recover.
TODEC Legal Center provides legal support to immigrants facing detention and deportation and is assisting families like the Ramirez family. Advocates say they anticipate similar cases continuing throughout the year and emphasize the importance of community support. Despite the uncertainty, the family says they remain hopeful that ongoing legal efforts will reunite them with their loved ones.
