Iowa Couple Marries in Hospital ICU So Bride’s Terminally Ill Mother Could Attend
An Iowa couple made a last-minute decision to marry inside a hospital so the bride’s terminally ill mother could be present for the special moment.
Tim and Stephanie Couser had planned to marry on September 20, 2025. But when doctors at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames told Stephanie’s mother, Marlys Carlson, that she was nearing the end of her life, the couple quickly changed course. In just seven hours, a new wedding plan came together.
Marlys had been battling Stage 4 lung cancer and was also being treated for pneumonia when doctors determined her condition was worsening. Stephanie said a difficult conversation with her mother’s doctor made it clear time was limited. Determined to have her mother witness the wedding, Stephanie texted Tim from the hospital and asked if he wanted to get married that day.
Hospital staff immediately stepped in to help. Nurses and employees worked together to organize the ceremony, securing a cake from a local bakery and finding a nurse to serve as photographer. Stephanie’s best friend, who was eight months pregnant, purchased a wedding ring from a nearby Walmart. Nurses even transformed Marlys’ ICU room into a bridal suite, helping her get dressed and ready for the day.
The ceremony took place in the hospital’s prayer chapel with 12 guests in attendance. Stephanie’s father, Greg Carlson, walked her down the aisle, while Marlys sat in the front row to watch her daughter exchange vows.
“It shouldn’t have worked, but it did,” Greg said, reflecting on the experience.
Four days after the ceremony, Marlys passed away. Eight weeks later, Tim and Stephanie held a larger celebration with family and friends, honoring Marlys’ memory throughout the day.
Stephanie says she felt her mother’s presence during both ceremonies and credits the hospital staff for making an unforgettable moment possible.
