Trump’s Economic Speech Drifts Into Personal Tangents During North Carolina Appearance
President Donald Trump traveled to North Carolina on Friday intending to focus on the economy, but his remarks quickly expanded into a wide-ranging speech marked by personal stories, political grievances, and off-topic commentary.
During the rally in Rocky Mount, Trump spent portions of his 90-minute address highlighting economic talking points, including a recent report showing inflation cooling, his administration’s efforts to lower certain drug prices, and an increase in the unemployment rate that he framed as a result of cutting government jobs. Supporters behind him held signs reading “Lower Prices” and “Bigger Paychecks.”
However, the speech frequently drifted from its economic focus. At one point, Trump described how his wife, Melania Trump, organizes her lingerie drawer while discussing the 2022 FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, using the anecdote to underscore what he described as personal violations during investigations he faced while out of office.
The crowd responded most enthusiastically when Trump revisited past political rivalries. He drew loud cheers when referencing Hillary Clinton and reminiscing about the 2016 election. Other diversions included mocking French President Emmanuel Macron with an accent while recounting pharmaceutical negotiations and criticizing the news media.
As the speech continued, Trump expanded his grievances to include former allies, singling out Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, whom he referred to with a derogatory nickname. He also spoke at length about investigations involving the Justice Department, joking about awarding himself a large settlement and donating it to charity.
Trump also addressed questions surrounding his health and stamina, asserting that he feels as strong as he did decades ago and claiming success on cognitive tests. He told the audience he would make any future decline public.
The rally reflected the familiar speaking style Trump calls “the weave,” blending policy points with free-flowing personal commentary. While some advisers have urged him to stay focused on economic messaging ahead of the midterm elections, Trump defended his approach, describing himself as “controlled neurotic” and suggesting that it fuels his energy on the campaign trail.
