Desert Regional Nurses Plan Candlelight Vigil Over Patient Safety and Staffing Concerns

Registered nurses at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs are planning a candlelight vigil this evening to draw attention to concerns they say could impact patient safety and quality of care.

The action was announced by the California Nurses Association, which represents nurses at the hospital. The union says nurses are worried about understaffing and believe current conditions may be putting patients at risk. According to the association, nurses remain committed to caring for their patients but feel hospital leadership is prioritizing cost-cutting measures over improvements to patient care.

In addition to the vigil, nurses will host a food drive benefiting The Path, an outreach program that serves chronically homeless adults in the Coachella Valley. Community members are invited to attend the vigil and donate non-perishable food items.

Desert Care Network, which operates Desert Regional Medical Center, has responded to the announcement of the vigil. In a statement, the network said the California Nurses Association is holding the demonstration because both sides are currently negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement, not because of substantiated patient safety concerns.

Desert Care Network also stated it continues to work with the union toward reaching a fair contract agreement.

The vigil is expected to highlight the ongoing dialogue between nurses and hospital leadership as negotiations continue, while also serving as a moment of reflection on patient care and community support.
