Desert Regional Nurses to Hold Candlelight Vigil Over Staffing, Patient Safety Concerns
Registered nurses at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs are planning a candlelight vigil tonight at 6 p.m. to call attention to what they describe as ongoing patient safety and staffing concerns. The event is being organized by the California Nurses Association, which says understaffing could put patient care at risk.
Nurses say they remain deeply committed to their patients but believe hospital management is prioritizing cost-cutting over improving care conditions. In addition to the vigil, nurses will also host a food drive benefiting PATH, an outreach program that serves chronically homeless adults. Community members are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items.
Desert Care Network, which operates Desert Regional Medical Center, responded by stating the demonstration is related to ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement rather than verified patient safety issues. The hospital says it continues to work with the union toward a fair contract.
NBC Palm Springs will have continuing coverage and updates on tonight’s vigil during the 5 and 6 o’clock newscasts.
