Firearm Safety During the Holidays

During the holiday season, families often focus on fire and electrical safety, but experts say another critical safety issue also deserves attention. With an estimated 4.6 million children home for holiday break, the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s consistently see some of the highest rates of unintentional shootings throughout the year.

Safety advocates say the increase is often linked to more children at home, changes in routine, and unsecured firearms. They stress that simple prevention steps, such as safe storage and open conversations with kids, can make a life-saving difference.

NBC Palm Springs Mary Strong is joined by Colleen Creighton, Director of End Family Fire, who is here to share important tips for families and caregivers on how to prevent these types of tragedies from happening and keep children safe during the holiday season.
