The U.S. Justice Department has released thousands of documents and images connected to investigations into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, offering new material while also fueling fresh controversy over what remains hidden.

The highly anticipated release, made public Friday, includes records and photographs that shed light on Epstein’s network and activities. However, many of the documents were heavily redacted or released without context, and officials confirmed the disclosure is only partial, with additional files still to come.

One major development involves Maria Farmer, one of Epstein’s earliest accusers. Newly released FBI records show that law enforcement was aware of allegations against Epstein as far back as 1996, a decade before his first arrest. Farmer and her family say the documents confirm long-standing claims that authorities failed to act despite early warnings.

The release also contained numerous photographs showing Epstein with well-known political and entertainment figures. The Justice Department emphasized that appearing in the files does not indicate wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein’s crimes. Officials reiterated that their review did not uncover evidence to justify investigations into uncharged third parties.

Questions intensified after several images were temporarily removed from the DOJ website and later restored. The department said the removals were part of a review process to ensure victims were not depicted. DOJ officials have acknowledged that the scale of redactions, which included more than 1,200 victim-related names, left room for both human and technical errors.

Lawmakers from both parties criticized the department for failing to fully comply with a law signed last month requiring the release of all unclassified Epstein-related materials within 30 days. Some members of Congress warned of possible consequences if the Justice Department does not complete the disclosure.

Epstein survivors have also spoken out, saying the redactions are excessive, inconsistent, and difficult to navigate. They argue the process has caused additional harm and confusion as they seek information about their own cases.

The Justice Department says it is continuing a document-by-document review and plans to release more records while prioritizing victim protection.
