Airplane lands itself during in-flight emergency, marking first real-world use of aviation Autoland system

A major milestone in aviation automation unfolded near Denver when an airplane successfully landed itself during an in-flight emergency, marking the first real-world use of a fully autonomous emergency landing system.

According to Garmin, the manufacturer of the Autoland technology, a Beechcraft Super King Air 200 safely touched down at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport after experiencing a rapid and uncommanded loss of cabin pressurization. Two people on board were not injured, and emergency responders confirmed the aircraft came to a complete stop on the runway without incident.

The plane was operated by charter company Buffalo River Aviation and was flying from Aspen with no passengers aboard when the emergency occurred. Company CEO Chris Townsley said the pilots donned oxygen masks as the cabin altitude rose beyond safe levels. At that point, Garmin’s Autoland system automatically engaged, functioning exactly as it was designed to do.

Autoland takes control of the aircraft’s autopilot, selects a suitable airport, communicates with air traffic control, and performs the landing without pilot input. Audio from air traffic control captured an automated announcement alerting nearby pilots of an emergency auto-landing.

While initial automated messages suggested pilot incapacitation, Buffalo River Aviation later clarified that the pilots were conscious and deliberately chose to keep the system engaged to reduce risk in an unpredictable situation.

Garmin says Autoland is currently installed on about 1,700 aircraft, but this marks the first time the technology has completed a start-to-finish emergency landing during an actual flight incident. The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the event.

The successful landing is being viewed as a significant step forward in aviation safety, demonstrating how automation can assist crews during critical emergencies and potentially save lives.
