Cathedral City Clears Drains Ahead of Storm

With rain expected to impact the Coachella Valley, Cathedral City Public Works crews have been working throughout the city to reduce the risk of flooding. Crews have cleared storm drains at approximately 60 locations, focusing on major roads and neighborhoods, including Date Palm Drive, Dinah Shore Drive, Ramon Road, Vista Chino, Avenida Maravilla, and Cathedral Canyon. Officials say these efforts are crucial to keeping water flowing and preventing backups during heavy rainfall.

Public Works Director John Carolla emphasized that while the city is doing its part, homeowners also share responsibility when it comes to flood prevention. He noted that residential properties were designed with drainage plans in place, and it is important for residents to maintain those systems so water can flow where it is intended.

Homeowners are encouraged to make sure water has a clear path to the street or designated drainage areas, which for many properties is the front of the home. Clearing debris from rain gutters and downspouts is another key step, as clogged systems can cause water to pool near foundations and increase the risk of flooding.

City officials stress that preparation on both public and private property can significantly reduce storm impacts.
