CHP Steps Up Holiday Traffic Enforcement

The California Highway Patrol has issued a local alert ahead of the Christmas holiday, warning drivers that increased enforcement will be in effect across the state. The annual holiday enforcement period begins Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. and runs through late Thursday night, with all available CHP officers on patrol. The goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

CHP officials say enforcement efforts will focus heavily on impaired driving, excessive speeding, and reckless behavior. Drivers are being reminded to slow down, remain alert, and never get behind the wheel while under the influence. Officers across Riverside County will be working alongside sheriff’s deputies and city police departments, conducting DUI checkpoints and extra patrols to keep roadways safe.

Statistics from last year’s Christmas enforcement period highlight the risks. CHP officers arrested more than 300 drivers statewide for driving under the influence and issued over 2,200 speeding tickets. Among those citations were more than 130 drivers clocked traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Tragically, 17 people were killed in crashes within CHP jurisdiction during the same holiday period.

Officials stress that these enforcement efforts are intended to save lives, not issue citations. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, use designated drivers, and allow extra travel time. CHP says safe choices behind the wheel can make the difference between a joyful holiday and a tragic one.
