Cities Offer Sandbags and Emergency Alerts Ahead of Rain
As rain moves into the region, local cities are stepping up efforts to help residents prepare for potential flooding and storm-related impacts. One of the most common and effective resources being offered is free sandbags, which can be used to help divert water away from homes and businesses. Officials say residents of the cities listed on screen can pick up sandbags at designated locations within their communities.
The sandbag stations are self-serve, meaning residents are asked to bring their own shovels. City officials also recommend filling the bags only halfway or about two-thirds full. This makes them easier to carry and place, as sandbags can become extremely heavy when filled completely. Proper placement and manageable weight can make a significant difference when protecting property from rising water.
In addition to physical supplies, cities are urging residents to sign up for emergency alert systems. These citywide notification services allow officials to quickly share important information during emergencies, including flood warnings, fire evacuations, shelter locations, and transportation updates. Alerts can be delivered through text messages, voice calls, or notifications sent to home phones, cell phones, and even computers.
Residents can register for alerts through their individual city’s website. For those living in areas without a city-specific system, Alert RivCo is available and provides emergency notifications for all of Riverside County. Officials stress that staying informed is just as important as preparing physically, especially during rapidly changing weather conditions.
