Holiday Travel Rush Underway as Millions Hit the Road
The holiday travel rush is officially underway, and today is shaping up to be one of the busiest driving days of the week.
AAA estimates more than 109 million people will drive to their holiday destinations nationwide—a 2% increase from last year. According to the travel group, today, Friday, and Sunday are expected to be the heaviest travel days on the roads.
Across the Coachella Valley and beyond, drivers are packing up early with cars full of gifts, luggage, and carefully planned GPS routes. Many travelers say they’re preparing for heavier traffic—but there’s some welcome relief at the gas pump.
For the first time in four years, the national average gas price has dropped below $3 a gallon, and analysts say prices could continue to decline as 2025 comes to a close.
AAA and GasBuddy say the lower prices are being driven by a combination of strong fuel supply and softer demand, allowing drivers to keep a little more money in their pockets during the busy travel season.
AAA recommends travelers plan ahead, allow extra time for delays, and make sure their vehicles are road-ready before heading out. With the busiest travel days still ahead, officials say patience will be key.
