New HPV Test Offers Pain-Free Alternative to Traditional OB-GYN Exams

For many women, the annual visit to the OB-GYN is a source of anxiety and discomfort. However, a significant advancement in women's health is changing the landscape of cervical cancer screening, making the process less invasive and more accessible. Dr. Rhett Papa and OB-GYN provider Madeline Rubenick recently joined NBC Palm Springs to discuss the rollout of a new HPV self-swab test that eliminates the need for the dreaded "plastic spatula" scraping.

Scientific research established nearly two decades ago that the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer. Medical experts note that without a long-term HPV infection, individuals are highly unlikely to develop cervical cancer. This understanding has paved the way for the new self-swab method, which is primarily aimed at women between the ages of 30 and 65.

"This adds a whole new level of safety for women that might feel uncomfortable," the providers explained. The test utilizes a soft cotton swab rather than a speculum and can be performed in the privacy of your own home or a private room at the clinic. The test provides a simple "yes or no" result regarding the presence of the virus. If the result is positive, follow-up testing at the clinic is required.

Beyond this screening, the team emphasized that their facility is an excellent starting point for all general gynecology needs, including birth control, STI testing, and well-woman care from teen years onward.
