Community Volunteers Deliver Christmas Dinners to Families Impacted by Immigration Crackdown

Community members in New Orleans are spreading holiday compassion to families impacted by an ongoing immigration crackdown that has left many residents afraid to leave their homes.

As federal agents continue Operation Catahoula Crunch, immigration attorneys say many Hispanic families are avoiding public spaces, including grocery stores and restaurants, out of fear of possible encounters with agents. Immigration attorney John Sharby Guevara says that fear has forced many families to remain isolated during the holiday season.

To help ease that burden, Guevara and fellow attorney Casey Cowley partnered with a local Hispanic restaurant and community volunteers to deliver Christmas meals directly to families’ doorsteps. The effort reached approximately 100 families across the area.

Volunteers delivered bags filled with holiday food, including ham, pasta salad, croissants, cookies, and other meal items. Organizers say the goal was to provide not just food, but reassurance and a sense of solidarity during a stressful and emotional time.

According to Guevara, many families are also dealing with the pain of separation. He says recent legal changes have made it more difficult for detained individuals to receive bond, leaving some parents unable to be home for the holidays. In one case, a father remains in a detention center while his premature newborn son is in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Despite the challenges, organizers say they remain hopeful that the new year will bring positive change and renewed movement within the community. They describe the holiday deliveries as a small but meaningful step toward showing families they are not alone.
