Most Americans Feel Unheard by Trump and Democratic Leaders, With Economy Top Concern

Most Americans say they don’t believe their political leaders are listening to them, according to a new CNN poll, and if they had the chance to speak directly to Washington, many say they would focus on the economy.

The survey, conducted by SSRS for CNN, asked Americans what they would tell President Donald Trump to make life better in the United States. Economic and cost-of-living issues were the most common response across political lines. Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, 40 percent mentioned concerns about affordability, jobs, or the overall economy.

Nearly four in ten Americans say neither the president nor Democratic Party leadership listens to people like them. Just 34 percent say Trump cares even somewhat about what they have to say, while 36 percent say the same about Democratic leaders.

While affordability remains a top concern for many voters, the poll found that other issues lag far behind. Only a small percentage of respondents mentioned immigration or foreign policy when asked what advice they would offer Trump. The economy is expected to play a major role in shaping voter sentiment heading into next year’s midterm elections.

Not all feedback focused on policy. Some respondents said they would urge Trump to resign, while others said they would offer praise. About 15 percent said Trump could help Americans most by changing aspects of his personal conduct, including his tone or approach to leadership.

Americans also had messages for Democratic leaders. Some said Democrats should fight harder against Trump and the Republican Party, while others called for more compromise and bipartisan cooperation. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, the preference leaned heavily toward taking a stronger stand rather than seeking compromise.

Across party lines, a recurring theme emerged: many Americans simply want to feel heard. Respondents said they want leaders to pay closer attention to everyday struggles in their communities and prioritize helping people over partisan politics.

The CNN poll was conducted from December 4 to 7 among 1,032 adults nationwide. Results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
