Stormy Christmas: Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding and Road Closures Across Coachella Valley
Southern California could see its wettest Christmas in years as a series of powerful storms move through the region, bringing heavy rain and the threat of flash flooding. Forecasters warn that multiple atmospheric rivers could worsen conditions, prompting flood warnings along the coast and emergency preparations across several counties. The California National Guard remains on standby as officials deploy resources and first responders statewide.
The storm system has already caused significant damage in Northern California, including flash flooding, water rescues, and at least one reported fatality. Locally, the Coachella Valley is experiencing light flooding, with several washes and major roadways closed due to excessive rainfall.
In Palm Springs, Gene Autry Trail at North Indian Canyon Drive has been shut down since the afternoon, while Vista Chino and Indian Canyon Drive are also closed in the west end of the valley. NBC Palm Springs reporter Tiani Jadulang reported from Cathedral City, where rain was falling steadily and drivers were being forced to turn around at barricades.
Despite the wet conditions, many residents and visitors were still out shopping for last-minute holiday needs. Officials continue to urge drivers to remain cautious, reminding the public that as little as 12 inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Road closures are expected to remain in place as storms continue, with updates available on local news and city channels.
