Why More Americans Are Moving to England’s Cotswolds in Search of a Slower Life

An increasing number of Americans are trading life in the United States for the rolling hills and centuries-old cottages of England’s Cotswolds, according to real estate agents and residents in the region.

The Cotswolds, located about 100 miles west of London, are known for picturesque villages, historic churches, and honey-colored stone homes. While long popular with tourists, the area is now seeing a noticeable rise in American buyers and renters, many of them wealthy and seeking a slower, more private lifestyle.

Local buying agents say interest from U.S.-based clients has risen sharply over the past year, with some estimating increases of 20% to 30%. Buyers cite a range of motivations, including access to British schools, concern over gun violence or wildfires, dissatisfaction with U.S. politics, and a desire for a quieter, more community-focused way of life.

Homes purchased by Americans often range from £1 million to tens of millions of pounds, with many buyers acquiring second or third properties. Agents say discretion is a major draw, as residents can live relatively anonymously in villages where celebrity sightings are not uncommon but rarely disruptive.

Some Americans are also renting rather than buying. One Pennsylvania family moved to the village of Painswick six months ago, renting a former coach house dating back to the 1700s. They say the area’s history, locally sourced food, and strong sense of community have helped them settle in quickly.

Real estate data shows the average home price in the Cotswolds is significantly higher than the national UK average, reflecting strong demand and the area’s appeal. Agents note that many American buyers are especially drawn to the idea of owning a piece of history, including manor houses that date back hundreds of years.

While some transplants say they may eventually return to the United States, many express little regret about their move. For them, life in the Cotswolds offers a quieter rhythm, deeper community ties, and a sense of calm they say is hard to replicate elsewhere.
