Kansas Homeowner Uses Bow and Arrow to Create Eye-Catching Holiday Light Display

A home in Stilwell, Kansas, is drawing plenty of attention this holiday season thanks to a dazzling light display that features more than 4,000 Christmas lights — and an unexpected tool to help make it happen.

Homeowner Tom Barnett has been building and expanding his festive display for the past 12 years, changing it slightly each year to keep things fresh and fun for passing drivers. He says the goal is simple: to make people smile.

Barnett’s setup process begins early, starting in September. He spends weeks running ropes and preparing the layout, continuing through October and into November before the lights are fully in place.

What sets his display apart is the unique method he uses to hang lights high in trees. Instead of ladders or lifts, Barnett uses a bow and arrow. He shoots an arrow weighted at the tip and tied to fishing line over tree limbs. Once the line drops down, he attaches it to rope or string and pulls it back over the branch, creating a sturdy support for the lights.

Barnett says he learned the technique from a friend who used a potato gun for similar displays, but adapted it to his own approach. The result is a creative and efficient way to decorate hard-to-reach spots.

His efforts have inspired neighbors and even extended beyond his own yard. Barnett has helped with lighting projects at the local arboretum and enjoys seeing others get involved in holiday decorating.

He says the work is well worth it, calling the process fun and rewarding. For him, the greatest payoff comes from knowing his display brings joy to the community.

Visitors can view the holiday lights along Metcalf Avenue, just north of 191st Street in Stilwell, Kansas, throughout the season.
