Local Businesses Share Holiday Hope in the Coachella Valley, One Slice at a Time
From leaders across the world to leaders right here in the Coachella Valley, two local business owners are making a difference this holiday season—one pizza slice at a time. The owners of Gabino’s Creperie and Popping Off Pies partnered once again to spread holiday cheer by hosting a community giveaway outside the Cathedral City Senior Center.
Early Christmas morning, business owners Marcel Ramirez and Chris Macartney handed out pizza slices, desserts, bottled water, and winter essentials to community members passing by. For many, the moment was emotional. Recipients expressed gratitude not just for the food, but for the kindness and care shown during a season that can be especially difficult.
The tradition began just over five years ago with one goal: to support those who may not have a warm meal or family to turn to during the holidays. Both owners say the mission is personal, shaped by past struggles and times when they themselves relied on community support. Giving back, they say, is a reminder of how far they’ve come—and how important it is to lift others up.
Each year, the giveaway moves to a different location across the Coachella Valley to reach new people in need. In addition to food, guests received socks, shoes, popcorn, and treats, offering both comfort and dignity.
Organizers say the event takes months of preparation, including making nearly 100 pizza doughs in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Despite the hard work, Ramirez and Macartney say the impact—sparking hope and bringing smiles—keeps the tradition alive, with plans to continue for years to come.
