Pennsylvania Museum Showcases Global Traditions Through World Nativities Exhibit

A holiday exhibit in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, is highlighting the global diversity of Christmas traditions through a unique collection of nativity scenes from around the world.

The Glencairn Museum’s World Nativities Exhibition features 63 nativity scenes representing 29 different countries, showcasing how cultures across the globe interpret the story of the birth of Jesus. Visitors can see works crafted from a wide range of materials, from steel drums and painted metal to textiles and handcrafted figures.

One standout piece comes from Haiti, made from repurposed steel drums that were cut, flattened, and painted by the artist. Other scenes originate from countries including Venezuela and Egypt, each reflecting the artistic style and cultural influences of its region.

The exhibit also includes a deeply personal contribution from Chester County native A.J. DiAntonio, who crocheted a nativity set with his grandmother when he was just 13 years old. Museum staff say the piece represents the emotional connection many families have to the Christmas story.

New this year, the museum added a make-your-own nativity activity designed for children. Parents say the hands-on experience gives kids a creative way to engage with the holiday and learn about different traditions.

The exhibition is housed in the former home of Glencairn’s original owners, Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn. Their family says the decision to open the home to the public has allowed generations of visitors to appreciate both the collection and the history behind it.

The museum is closed on Christmas Day but will reopen the day after Christmas. The World Nativities Exhibition will remain on display through January.
