$1.8 Billion Powerball Winner in Arkansas May Stay Anonymous Under State Law
A single Powerball ticket sold at a Murphy USA gas station in Cabot, Arkansas, has matched all six numbers to claim an estimated $1.8 billion jackpot, the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. The winning numbers were 4, 25, 31, 52, 59, and Powerball 19, ending a record-breaking drawing cycle.
Under Arkansas law, the winner may be able to remain anonymous for some time. Since 2021, the state has allowed lottery winners of prizes over $500,000 to shield their identities, though names are eventually made public after three years. Winners claiming more than $1 million must still appear in person at the Arkansas Lottery claim center. The ticket holder has 180 days to claim the prize.
Most jackpot winners choose the lump sum option rather than annual payments. In this case, the lump sum would total about $834.9 million before taxes.
Arkansas is among several states offering privacy protections for lottery winners. New Jersey, Georgia, and Arizona also allow anonymity, while Florida permits winners to claim prizes through trusts or LLCs. Supporters of these laws say they help protect winners from safety risks, harassment, and financial pressure.
Financial experts advise jackpot winners to take time before claiming their prize and to consult attorneys, financial advisors, and mental health professionals to manage the sudden change. Paying off debt, planning for taxes, and making charitable contributions are often recommended first steps.
The Murphy USA gas station that sold the ticket will receive a $50,000 bonus. The next Powerball drawing in the new cycle is scheduled for Saturday night.
