Arkansas Ticket Wins $1.8 Billion Powerball Jackpot on Christmas Eve

Someone in Arkansas just had the ultimate Christmas Eve. A single ticket sold in Cabot matched all six numbers in Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, claiming a $1.817 billion jackpot—the second-largest in U.S. lottery history and the biggest Powerball prize of the year.
The winner can take the full amount in annual payments or opt for a lump sum of $834.9 million. Arkansas Lottery spokesperson Karen Reynolds confirmed the winning location to NBC News but didn't release the store name.
Wednesday's drawing capped an unusually long jackpot run. The prize had rolled over 47 times without a winner—the longest stretch in Powerball history. The jackpot was estimated at $1.7 billion going into the drawing after no one won Monday night.
Christmas Eve wins are rare. It's only happened once before, in 2011. The jackpot has been claimed on Christmas Day four times: 1996, 2002, 2010, and 2013.
This marks just the second time a Powerball jackpot has been won in Arkansas. The state's only previous winner came in 2010.
For those who play, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9. Powerball tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
