“Homies” Group Steps Up to Fight Hunger and Cold Weather in Philadelphia Neighborhood

As winter temperatures drop, a group of neighbors in Philadelphia is taking action to help residents facing hunger and the cold. Volunteers with Homies Helping Homies gathered in the Point Breeze neighborhood to prepare food boxes and distribute warm clothing to families in need.

Working in December’s chill with the help of a propane heater, volunteers packed boxes filled with rescued food and sorted through donations of coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and other cold-weather essentials. Co-founder Anthony Adams said the mission goes beyond charity and directly impacts public safety.

Adams explained that food insecurity can push people into desperate situations, making community support essential. By helping families meet basic needs, the group hopes to reduce stress and hardship while strengthening neighborhood stability.

Much of the food distributed comes from volunteer efforts to prevent waste. Alexis Buss, a volunteer from West Philadelphia, said her role involves rescuing food from grocery stores before it spoils and ends up in landfills. She described the work as meaningful, knowing the food goes directly to people who need it.

After packing supplies, volunteers distributed food and clothing to families waiting in line at Wharton Square Park. Sylvia Davis came not only for herself but also for her six-year-old granddaughter. She expressed gratitude for both the fresh produce and the respectful treatment she received.

Adams said moments like that confirm the group is making a difference, while also highlighting how much work remains. Homies Helping Homies plans to hold distributions during the first three weekends of every month.
