Hundreds of thousands of Epstein files released, with millions more still under review
Hundreds of thousands of documents tied to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have now been released by the Justice Department, but officials say the process is far from finished and will likely stretch into 2026.
The releases follow a new transparency law passed by Congress last month, requiring the Justice Department to publish all records related to Epstein. The law set a December 19 deadline, but despite that date passing, officials acknowledge there is still a massive volume of material left to review.
So far, the Justice Department has posted hundreds of thousands of pages to an online hub known as the “Epstein Library.” The material includes court filings, responses to public records requests, and documents previously released by the House Oversight Committee. A significant portion of the new material comes from FBI investigations in Florida and New York that span decades.
The disclosures have drawn criticism from Epstein survivors and lawmakers from both parties, who say the releases are incomplete and, in some cases, improperly redacted. In at least one instance, concerns were raised that a victim’s identity may have been exposed. At the same time, other documents were heavily redacted, prompting complaints that key information remains hidden.
The situation escalated further when the Justice Department announced it had uncovered more than one million additional documents potentially related to Epstein. Officials say those records will take weeks to review to ensure victim identities are protected, as required by law.
Some lawmakers have questioned how such a large cache of documents surfaced months after the law was passed and long after federal agencies were ordered to turn over all Epstein-related files. Members of Congress have warned that Justice Department leaders could face consequences if they fail to fully comply with the law.
The department says it is working around the clock, but with the scale of the material involved, more releases are expected well into the new year.
