Trump and Zelenskyy Report Progress After Mar-a-Lago Meeting, but No Peace Deal Yet
President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met for nearly three hours Sunday in South Florida, with both leaders describing progress toward ending the war with Russia—though a final peace agreement remains out of reach.
The meeting followed a two-hour phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. Trump characterized Sunday's talks as productive and said the parties are "getting a lot closer" to a resolution.
Zelenskyy offered more specific details, saying the two sides have reached 90% agreement on a 20-point peace plan and full agreement on U.S.-Ukraine security guarantees and military support. Security guarantees to deter future Russian attacks remain a central Ukrainian priority.
"We have great achievements," Zelenskyy said. "US-Europe-Ukraine security guarantees, almost agreed."
The question of territory—particularly how to handle the contested Donbas region—remains unresolved. Trump acknowledged the sides have not agreed on how to establish a separation line or who would oversee it, though he said they're moving closer.
Russia has not agreed to a temporary ceasefire ahead of any deal, Trump confirmed.
Both leaders said their teams will meet in the coming weeks to finalize details. Trump indicated he may host Zelenskyy, European leaders, and a Ukrainian delegation in Washington in January, though he stopped short of setting a firm deadline. He said they'll have a better sense of where things stand "in a few weeks."
