Winter Storms Snarl Post-Holiday Travel Across the Country

A powerful winter storm system is making the trip home from the holidays a difficult one for millions of Americans today.

"This is kind of the last hurrah for folks who haven't left already to return home," said Mark Schieldrop, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast.

Storms spawning along a cold front are hitting the Northeast with severe snow and ice, while the Midwest faces blizzard conditions with winds reaching up to 60 miles per hour in some areas. Chicago O'Hare Airport issued a ground stop yesterday, and utilities have reported more than 100,000 power outages across the region.

Road conditions have turned dangerous in several states. In Iowa, a 14-vehicle pileup occurred amid zero visibility. Parts of Illinois are still recovering from tornado damage caused by the same storm system.

Air travel has taken a hit as well. FlightAware tracked roughly 10,000 U.S. flight delays and 800 cancellations on Sunday, following another rough day for passengers on Saturday.

For those still on the road or heading to the airport today, build in extra time and check conditions before you go.
