AOC, Bernie Sanders to Lead Mamdani's New Year's Day Inauguration

New York City's next mayor will kick off his term flanked by the Democratic Party's two most prominent progressive figures. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will introduce Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at his public inauguration, and Senator Bernie Sanders will administer the oath of office.
The ceremony takes place New Year's Day at City Hall and is open to 4,000 ticketed guests. Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist, will become the city's youngest mayor.
Technically, Mamdani assumes office at midnight on January 1st. While revelers count down to 2026 in Times Square, he'll have a private swearing-in at City Hall Station—the ornate, defunct subway platform beneath City Hall Plaza that closed to passengers in 1945.
