Three Hikers Found Dead on Mount Baldy Trail
Three hikers were found dead on Mount Baldy in San Bernardino County after a rescue effort was hampered by severe weather and treacherous terrain. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were initially called to search for a 19-year-old hiker who had fallen an estimated 500 feet along the Devil’s Backbone trail.
During an aerial search, rescuers located the injured hiker along with two other individuals nearby. However, high winds in the area prevented immediate rescue efforts. Later Monday evening, a medic was lowered to the scene and pronounced all three hikers deceased.
Authorities emphasized that the Devil’s Backbone is one of the most dangerous trails in the region, especially under current conditions. Officials say the trail is extremely narrow, not designed for casual hiking, and has been made even more hazardous by icy surfaces.
Sheriff’s officials are urging the public, particularly novice hikers, to avoid the trail, noting that even experienced hikers can encounter serious trouble. They also stressed the risks faced by volunteer search and rescue teams who put their own lives in danger during such operations.
