Asheville Police Urge Extra Caution When Using Rideshare Services on New Year’s Eve
As people head out to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Asheville police are urging anyone using rideshare services to stay alert and take extra precautions during what is expected to be one of the busiest nights of the year.
The Asheville Police Department says many residents and visitors will rely on services like Uber and Lyft to get home safely, but officers want riders to trust their instincts and speak up if something feels wrong. Police say riders can end a trip at any time if they feel uncomfortable and should call 911 in an emergency.
With large crowds expected throughout the city, officers will be working throughout the night to maintain public safety. Police are also asking people not to assume someone else will report suspicious activity, encouraging the public to call it in if they see something concerning.
APD recommends requesting rides from secure, well-lit locations and avoiding distractions while waiting. Officers advise riders to stay indoors when possible instead of standing outside focused on their phones.
Police also encourage riders to take advantage of built-in safety features offered by rideshare apps, including location-sharing tools that allow trip details to be shared with friends or family members. Riding with friends and letting someone know where you are going are also recommended.
Rideshare drivers say safety is just as important for them. One driver explained that he prepares in advance by making sure his vehicle is clean and ready for long hours on the road. Drivers say New Year’s Eve often brings back-to-back trips, with a surge in ride requests in the early morning hours.
With increased traffic and alcohol-related risks, both police and drivers say awareness and preparation can go a long way in helping everyone get home safely.
