Smoke Alarms Credited With Saving 71-Year-Old Woman in Maryland House Fire
Investigators in Maryland say working smoke alarms are being credited with saving the life of a 71-year-old woman after a destructive house fire early Tuesday morning.
According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, the fire was reported around 3:19 a.m. in the 4100 block of Prospect Road in Whiteford, located in Harford County. Authorities say the homeowner was alerted by smoke alarms, allowing her to escape the home and reach a neighbor to call 911.
The fire spread quickly due to extremely strong winds in the area. Nearly 50 firefighters responded and worked for about two hours to bring the flames under control. Despite their efforts, investigators say the fire caused significant structural damage, leaving the home close to collapse.
State officials estimate the fire caused roughly $500,000 in damage. While the homeowner was able to escape safely, investigators believe her pet cats did not survive the fire.
No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
Harford County Disaster Assistance is now helping the displaced homeowner with recovery efforts following the fire.
Fire officials are using the incident as another reminder of the importance of working smoke alarms, noting that early detection can be the difference between life and death during a fire.
