The Clock Is Ticking on 2025 But There’s Still Time to Prioritize Your Health
As the year winds down, many people are focused on holiday plans, travel, and setting goals for the year ahead. But health experts say the final weeks of the year are also a smart time to pause and check in on your health before the calendar turns to 2026.
Mandy Gaither spoke with a family physician about why the end of the year is an ideal moment to tackle important health to-dos that often get pushed aside.
Why Now Matters
Doctors say December is more than just a countdown to the new year. It is also a deadline for many health benefits. Insurance deductibles may reset, flexible spending accounts often have use-it-or-lose-it rules, and preventive care appointments can be harder to schedule once the January rush hits.
“People are often surprised by how much they can still take care of in a short amount of time,” the physician said. “Even small steps now can make a big difference going into the new year.”
Your Year-End Health Checklist
Health experts recommend focusing on a few key areas before the year wraps up.
Schedule preventive screenings such as annual physicals, vision and dental exams, and age-appropriate tests.
Review medications and refills to be sure prescriptions are up to date and side effects are addressed.
Use remaining health benefits including flexible spending or health savings account funds.
Update vaccines if needed to help protect against seasonal illness.
Check in on mental health, especially as stress levels rise during the holidays.
Setting Yourself Up for a Healthier New Year
Physicians stress that this is not about perfection. It is about preparation. Taking care of lingering health tasks now can reduce stress and help people start the new year feeling organized and proactive.
“Think of it as a reset,” the doctor said. “You are giving yourself a healthier starting line for whatever goals you have in 2026.”
With the clock ticking down on 2025, experts say there is still time to make your health a priority and your future self may thank you for it.
