Deadly Fire at Swiss Ski Resort Turns New Year’s Celebration Into Tragedy

New Year’s celebrations in Switzerland turned tragic after a massive fire broke out at a popular bar inside the luxury ski resort of Crans-Montana, killing around 40 people and injuring more than 100 others. Authorities described the incident as one of the worst tragedies the country has experienced in recent years.

The fire began in the early hours of New Year’s Day at Le Constellation, a bar located near the heart of the resort. Valais Cantonal Police say smoke was first reported around 1:30 a.m., prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Police were on the scene within minutes and were soon joined by firefighters and medical teams from across the region.

Le Constellation was hosting a crowded New Year’s Eve event, with witnesses estimating that as many as 200 people were inside when the fire erupted. Several eyewitnesses told local media the blaze may have started after sparklers placed on champagne bottles came into contact with the ceiling. Investigators say it is too early to confirm the cause, but officials have ruled out terrorism and are treating the incident as an accidental fire.

Survivors described scenes of panic as flames spread rapidly through the venue. Some recalled people screaming and struggling to escape as smoke filled the bar. Footage released by police shows overturned furniture and signs of a frantic evacuation.

Of the 115 people injured, many remain in critical condition. Hospitals across Switzerland have been overwhelmed, with patients transferred to specialized burn centers in Lausanne and Zurich. Some injured victims were also transported to hospitals in neighboring countries, including Italy. Authorities say identifying the victims could take several days, as many are foreign nationals visiting the resort.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the incident a devastating loss and postponed a scheduled address to the nation out of respect for the victims. International leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have offered condolences as the investigation continues.
