More Than 2,000 Measles Cases Reported in the US as Outbreaks Threaten Elimination Status

The United States has reported more than 2,000 measles cases this year, marking the highest annual total seen in decades and raising concerns among public health officials about the country’s measles elimination status.

According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been 2,065 confirmed measles cases nationwide as of December 30. The last time the U.S. recorded more than 2,000 cases in a single year was in 1992, before health officials updated vaccination guidelines to recommend two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine for children.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known, but it is largely preventable through vaccination. The CDC says one dose of the MMR vaccine is 93 percent effective, while two doses offer 97 percent protection. However, vaccination rates have declined in recent years. Last school year, only 92.5 percent of incoming kindergarten students had received the MMR vaccine, falling below the 95 percent threshold needed to prevent outbreaks.

Ongoing outbreaks continue to drive case numbers higher. A growing outbreak in upstate South Carolina has reached nearly 180 cases, with dozens more reported in recent days. Nearly 300 people remain in quarantine due to potential exposure. Health officials say transmission is occurring in households, schools, and churches.

Another major outbreak along the Arizona-Utah border has resulted in more than 350 cases this year. Earlier in 2025, a large outbreak centered in West Texas spread into New Mexico and resulted in hundreds of cases and three deaths, all involving unvaccinated individuals.

The U.S. has been considered measles-free since 2000, meaning no outbreak has lasted longer than a year. However, health experts warn that possible genetic links between recent outbreaks could jeopardize that designation if transmission continues into late January.

Public health officials say additional cases are expected in the coming weeks and are closely monitoring whether the outbreaks could threaten the nation’s measles elimination status.
