New Drone Technology Helps Coachella Valley Fight Mosquito-Borne Diseases

The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District is now using drones to detect and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds before outbreaks begin.

Equipped with cameras and mapping technology, the drones help crews locate standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs, including areas that are difficult or unsafe to reach on foot. Once identified, the drones can apply small amounts of environmentally friendly larvicides that target mosquito larvae without harming people, animals, or the surrounding environment.

Officials say the technology allows for faster, more precise treatments, reducing the need to spray large areas unnecessarily. With new drones offering enhanced capabilities, staff continue training to maximize effectiveness and better protect the community.

The district says this innovative approach is a major step forward in mosquito control, helping reduce disease risk while keeping the Coachella Valley safer and healthier.
