Cactus Cup Returns to the Desert, Bringing NCAA Hockey to Acrisure Arena

The second annual Cactus Cup dropped the puck Friday at Acrisure Arena, marking the first major sporting event of 2026 in the Coachella Valley. Game one featured UMass Lowell taking on Minnesota State, followed by an evening matchup between Yale University and St. Cloud State.

Firebirds and Acrisure Arena Senior Vice President John Page says bringing collegiate hockey back to the desert is an exciting way to start the year, highlighting the strong national presence of the participating teams, including Minnesota State, currently ranked 14th in NCAA hockey.

The tournament continues Friday, with winners facing winners and losers facing losers, offering fans a full slate of competitive hockey. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or directly at the Acrisure Arena box office with no service fees.

Between Friday’s games, fans can also catch the All-Valley High School Junior Firebirds at the Berger Iceplex, featuring a special glow-themed night to kick off the new year.
