Bipartisan Budget Deal Reaches $180 Billion, But Shutdown Threat Isn't Over Yet

Congressional negotiators have reached a bipartisan budget agreement worth roughly $180 billion, offering a partial resolution to the looming government shutdown standoff. The deal lands somewhere in the middle—less than Biden-era spending levels but more than what President Donald Trump initially requested.
Democrats say they pushed back against more than $100 billion in proposed cuts during negotiations with Republicans. The final package includes funding for energy programs, scientific research, the Justice Department, and several other federal agencies.
The agreement doesn't cover everything, though. Congress still has to work through other contentious funding areas before the next deadline hits on January 30th. That means more negotiations—and more potential for brinkmanship—in the weeks ahead.
