Fire Destroys Bathroom Facility at Salton Sea Recreation Center in Mecca

A fire broke out Sunday at the Salton Sea Recreation Center in Mecca, damaging a bathroom facility and prompting a multi-agency response.

Fire crews arrived in the afternoon to find a single-story restroom building fully engulfed in flames, with heavy black smoke visible from the scene. Firefighters worked quickly to knock down the blaze, and the fire was contained in about an hour.

California State Parks and the Imperial Irrigation District were notified following the fire, given the location and surrounding infrastructure. Crews remained on scene for approximately two additional hours to complete mop-up operations and ensure the area was safe.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Officials have not yet released information on what may have caused the blaze.

The Salton Sea Recreation Center is a popular destination in the region, and officials have not said whether the fire will impact public access to the area.
