Gov. Tim Walz Won't Seek Third Term in 2026

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced Monday that he will not run for reelection in 2026, reversing his position from just months ago.
In a statement released this morning, Walz framed the decision around his priorities for the remainder of his term. "Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can't spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity and the cynics who prey on our differences," he said.
The announcement comes as federal investigators continue to probe fraud in several state-administered programs. Walz had said as recently as last September that he planned to seek a third term.
The governor is scheduled to hold a press conference this afternoon to discuss his decision further.
